The Seawall Challenge

Established in Fort Myers, the Caloosa Yacht and Racquet Club is a central hub for homeowners and maritime enthusiasts. Recently, the club faced a pressing issue: noticeable voids and sinkholes behind the seawall adjacent to several clients’ backyards.

This concern quickly spread among residents, as it threatened both the structural integrity and functional efficiency of the seawall. Additionally, a recent rainfall and scour activity eroded the soil behind the seawall, creating numerous voids.

The Caloosa Yacht and Racquet Club’s 1,200-foot-long concrete seawall was displaying clear signs of stress and decay.

Faced with the severity of the situation, they sought an effective solution that would repair the seawall issue. They focused on minimizing disruption to the club’s operations and keeping costs manageable. Instead of opting for a conventional, labor-intensive seawall replacement. They decided to implement an innovative seawall repair solution with Seawall Savers.

At Seawall Savers, we provide innovative seawall repair solutions to ensure long-term protection for our coastal properties.

Enhancing Coastal Resilience through Advanced Seawall Erosion Control Solutions

Project Overview

An installation of 150 “JET Filters” maintainable weep hole filter. A Vermeer CX 160 supplied hydraulic energy to our submersible drills to install filters and braces. We installed 30 “Seawall Brace Panels” in the substrate. By placing them 12 inches beneath the mud line, and 7 to 8 feet between to meet the installation requirements.

In addition, the team also erected 13 concrete-filled seawall braces for highly decaying locations. In certain spalling seawall cap areas, we injected a two-part epoxy compound to fill fissures and cracks. The project took approximately two weeks with our experienced team

Our Solutions to Seawall Erosion

This case study is a comprehensive approach to reinforce and enhance the resilience of a Fort Myers coastal seawall. The approach utilized cutting-edge techniques and technologies to address seawall erosion control and stability. Here, Seawall Savers outlines the key components of this solution:

  • Jet Filters: were installed with precision to manage and control water flow effectively. These filters are critical in managing hydrostatic pressures.
  • Seawall Braces: The installation of Seawall Braces involved placing panels strategically on seawall slab joints. This process, along with other exclusive marine materials, stops upland soil erosion.
  • Seawall Drainage Systems: Drainage systems are essential for seawall erosion control, specifically in areas where larger voids are present. The Seawall Drainage Systems are created to be like vinyl panels with 5,000PSI concrete and attach to the seawall.
  • Epoxy Injection: This method involves injecting an epoxy grout material to fill and seal cracks in the seawall cap. Providing restoration to the integrity of the seawall structure.
  • Compacted Soil: Installation of compacted soil into voids or sinkholes. It is essential to minimize absorption and increase the strength of the seawall, which is crucial for preventing erosion.

Assessment and Evaluation

The first step in our repair strategy involves a comprehensive assessment of the seawall’s condition. We start by clearly outlining service expectations, detailing the specific goals and requirements the board has for the project.

Damage Evaluation: Identification and Assessment

  • Soil Composition: Secure detailed information about the soil types, including the presence of clay, silt, or sand.
  • Cracks: Assess the extent, size, and location of cracks in the seawall, noting whether they are surface or structural.
  • Erosion: Evaluate the degree of erosion at the base and behind the seawall. Additionally, check for soil loss and changes in the surrounding landscape, like sinkholes.
  • Corrosion: Examine the condition of any exposed metal reinforcements. Look for signs of rust or decay, including the impact on overall structural integrity.
  • Project Scope: Outline the full extent of work required, including any demolition, reconstruction, or additional features.
  • Budgetary Constraints: Communicate with the association to ensure that the proposed solutions fit within financial limits and discuss any flexibility available within the budget.
